A sacred fusion of original Western folk, Eastern rhythms, Hebrew prayers and traditional Indian mantra and melodies, “Spirit of Bhakti” is a unique trio offering music to nourish the soul.
Singer and songwriter, Rebecca Bornstein, presents her original compositions with soulful vocals and acoustic guitar. Raised in a Yoga Community in Califronia, Rebecca has been writing devotional songs from the age of 6. She has released several albums and won a Sunny Award for Original Song of the Year at the age of 16.
Menaka Thomas weaves a hauntingly beautiful pattern of ancient Indian melody. Menaka has been studying South Indian Classical music since the young age of 5 under the inspiring guidance of her mother, Vijaya Visvanathan of the Sri Krishna Music Academy in Brisbane. She has performed at many events, including the Woodford Folk Festival.
Shen Flindell brings the music to life with his percussive brilliance. Since being initiated into the Benares Gharana style of tabla in 1994, Shen has become one of Australia’s leading tabla players. He has been teaching for 20 years, with performances across Australia, India and Japan.
Rebecca, Menaka and Shen joined forces as ‘Spirit of Bhakti’ in early 2014 and have featured in events such as the Brisbane YogaFest, and at Sydney’s Super Retreat.
They released their first album, “Open Door” in June 2015. Key tracks of this album feature the internationally acclaimed 8th generation Sarangi maestro, Sangeet Mishra.
Spirit of Bhakti also recently featured on ABC Radio National’s program “The Rhythm Divine”.
